For owners of growing businesses

How much of
the business
still depends
on you?

More work should not mean
more of everything landing on you.

AI strategy, advice and implementation.
The strategy comes first.
The build is proof the advice works.

02 / The person behind the advice

I know what it takes
to carry the business.

20+

years buying, building,
scaling and selling businesses

I’m Maria Fethers. I have bought, built, scaled and sold businesses across construction, manufacturing, property and hospitality. I still run some of them.

I have carried the risk, made payroll and had to fix the thing I broke. My advice starts with what it takes to run the business on Monday morning.

Saïd Business School, University of Oxford
Artificial Intelligence Programme, completed in 2025.

Certified business mentor.

03 / My own method

Think it through.
Then make it work.

F.O.C.U.S is my framework for finding the right changes, doing the work and leaving the team able to run it. Part of what you pay for is being told when the answer is no.

FOCUS
  1. F

    Foundation

An honest read of the business. What is working, what costs time, where capacity actually goes.

  2. O

    Opportunities

Map the most useful interventions. Not everything needs an AI build.

  3. C

    Clarity

Cut the noise. Commit to the one or two changes that would genuinely move the business forward.

  4. U

    Upgrade

Build the systems, automations and AI that earned their place in Clarity. Scoped and quoted in writing before work starts.

  5. S

    Sustain

Handover and documentation so the team can run it.

04 / Real work · 01

The right answer
was a plan.

Specialist supplier · 6–15 staff
Selling mainly to architects and main contractors

Fifteen to twenty enquiries a week were answered by hand, even though the answers already existed in the spec sheets. Tenders were missed because measuring from large drawing packs took too long. Tender tracking lived on a wall of sticky notes.

They had already rejected one measuring product on accuracy. I re-examined the market myself: what each product could actually output, and whether it suited a specialist subcontractor rather than a main contractor.

One item:
NOT YET

A phased plan across three fronts. One item deliberately marked as not yet. Designed to work the same way in their second location overseas. Strategy with no build attached. No software sold in it.

Real work · 02

A week of work.
Every month.

Property management · Around 30 properties
Roughly 25 written client reports a month

1 week

of staff time each month
across five people

Day 1Day 2Day 3Day 4Day 5
The client’s own estimate of time spent assembling reports by hand. The five days illustrate a total week of effort, not a measured saving or five days per person.

Every report was assembled by hand, with a proofreading bottleneck at deadline. They had already tried the AI in their existing software. It was slow and kept running out of credits.

The work started with their actual reports: reading them closely and capturing the house style rules nobody had written down. The team now edits instead of writes.

The honest position, given in writing

The small and medium reports get dramatically faster.
The largest still need human judgement.

68

entries in the
knowledge base

Each block represents one entry.
Expertise the team can use.

Estimating sat almost entirely in one person’s head. We built a 68-entry knowledge base out of that expertise so it stops being a single point of failure.

We also built an internal platform that brings the operating picture and the accounts into one view.

I test things in my own business
before putting them in anyone else’s.

05 / When a build earns its place

Less chasing.
More control.

Every engagement is scoped to the business and never templated. Handover sessions and documentation are included by default.

  1. 01

    Business operating systems

The work, the people and the numbers, connected in one operating picture.

  2. 02

    Internal knowledge assistants

Answers the whole team can find, without interrupting the same person.

  3. 03

    Automated reporting and document drafting

First drafts in your house style, ready for the team to review.

  4. 04

    Client portals

One place for clients to find progress, documents and next steps.

  5. 05

    Lead management systems

Enquiries captured, owned and followed through.

  6. 06

    Reporting dashboards

A clear view of what is happening and what needs attention.

  7. 07

    AI receptionists

Overflow and out-of-hours calls answered, with the details recorded.

  8. 08

    Customer follow-up systems

The right follow-up at the right time, without relying on memory.

  9. 09

    Review and reputation systems

A consistent way to request reviews and see the feedback.
